About the Discount Calculator

Shops present discounts in whichever direction flatters the offer. Sometimes you get a percentage and have to work out the price; sometimes you get two prices and want to know whether the advertised percentage is honest. This calculator does both, which is the point — the second direction is the one that catches misleading labels.

Working the percentage out from two prices is worth doing more often than people do. A tag reading “was ₹2,000, now ₹1,650” is a 17.5% discount, not the 20% the sign nearby might suggest, and the arithmetic takes a second here.

The other thing worth knowing is that stacked discounts do not add up. An extra 20% off an item already reduced by 30% is not 50% off — it is 44%, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price. To check a stacked offer, run the first discount, then feed the result in as the original price for the second.

How to use the Discount Calculator

  1. Choose what you know

Either the discount percentage, or both the original and the sale price.

  2. Enter the prices

Type the original price and whichever second value you have. The result appears immediately.

  3. Read what you save

You get the amount saved, the final price and the real percentage, whichever direction you started from.

  4. Check a stacked offer

For a discount on top of a discount, take the first result and use it as the original price for the second.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the original price by the percentage divided by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it. For 25% off ₹2,000: 2000 × 0.25 = 500 saved, leaving ₹1,500.
How do I find the discount percentage from two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original, and multiply by 100. From ₹80 down to ₹60 that is 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%. Use the second mode here and it does it for you.
Do two discounts add together?
No. An extra 20% off something already 30% off is 44% in total, not 50%, because the second discount applies to the reduced price. Run the first discount, then use its result as the starting price for the second.
How do I work out the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by one minus the discount as a decimal. An item at ₹1,500 after 25% off was 1500 ÷ 0.75 = ₹2,000 originally.
Does this include tax?
No. It works purely on the numbers you enter. If your prices exclude GST, the GST calculator will add it once you have the discounted figure.
