About the QR Code Scanner

A QR code is a link you cannot read. That is the whole problem with them: the only way to find out where one goes is to follow it, by which point you are already there. This reads the code and shows you the contents first.

Two ways in. Point your camera at a code and it reads automatically — no button, no app to install. Or drop in a photo or screenshot, which is what you need on a desktop, or when the code arrived in an email or a document rather than on a wall.

What comes back depends on what the code holds. A link shows its address, broken into the domain and the path, so a lookalike domain is visible before you click anything. A Wi-Fi code shows the network name and the password, along with a reminder that anyone who photographs that code can read it. A contact card, a calendar event, a location or a text message are each pulled apart into readable fields rather than shown as raw text.

Links are only offered as clickable when they are ordinary web addresses. A code carrying a <code>javascript:</code> or <code>data:</code> link is shown and explained but never made clickable, because a scanner that hands you an unreadable link to press is the exact opposite of useful.

Frequently asked questions

Can I scan a QR code on the same device that is showing it?
Not with the camera, but yes with a screenshot. Take one, drop it in here, and the code is read from the image — which is the usual way to handle a code that arrived in an email or a PDF.
Why does nothing happen when I point the camera at a code?
Usually the code is too small in the frame, out of focus, or cut off at an edge. A QR code also needs a clear margin around it, so one printed right up against other content can be unreadable. Move closer, hold steady, or photograph it and upload the photo.
Are QR codes dangerous?
The code itself is just text, but you cannot see where it goes before following it — which is why stickers placed over real codes on parking meters and restaurant tables work so well. Reading the address first, as this does, removes most of the risk.
Why will it not let me click some links?
Because they are not ordinary web addresses. A code carrying a javascript: or data: link is shown and explained, but never made clickable — handing you an unreadable link to press would defeat the point of checking it first.
Does it need camera permission?
Only if you use the camera, and the browser asks you each time. Uploading an image needs no permission at all. Either way the reading happens in the page and no video or image is recorded or sent.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The camera feed and any photo you add are read inside your browser using a decoder downloaded to the page. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged.
