About the Image Converter

Three formats cover almost everything on the web, and each is right for something different. JPG is small and universal and cannot store transparency. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, and is several times larger for a photograph. WebP does both jobs better than either, and is refused by some software outside the browser.

This converter goes between all three, in any direction, several files at a time. If you know which format you need, pick it and the tool does the rest; if you are not sure, the short guide above the buttons says what each one costs you.

The one conversion to think about before making is anything to JPG. Transparent areas have to become something, and here they become white — right for a photograph, wrong for a logo intended to sit on a coloured background. Anything going to PNG or WebP keeps its transparency.

The quality slider only applies to JPG and WebP; PNG is lossless and ignores it. Ninety-two per cent is visually indistinguishable from the source, and for images destined for a web page, seventy-five to eighty-five usually saves considerably more for no difference anyone will notice.

Every conversion runs on your device, so there is no queue, no file limit imposed by a server, and no copy of your images anywhere but your own machine.

Frequently asked questions

Which format should I choose?
JPG for photographs that need to open anywhere. PNG for screenshots, logos and anything with transparency or sharp edges. WebP for images going on a website, where it is typically a quarter smaller than JPG at the same quality.
What happens to transparency?
PNG and WebP keep it. JPG cannot store it at all, so transparent areas become white — fine for a photograph, wrong for a logo meant to sit on a coloured background.
Can I convert several images at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like and they are all converted with the same settings, then downloaded individually or together. Since the work happens on your device there is no upload queue to wait in.
Does converting lose quality?
Converting to PNG never does. Converting to JPG or WebP re-encodes the image, which discards some detail — invisible at the default quality, but it accumulates if you convert the same image back and forth repeatedly.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Decoding and encoding both happen in your browser using a canvas, so no file leaves your device at any point.
